Meet the Skippers
Mitla Nova Lawson: For nearly ten years, Misty (MitlaNova) Lawson has been driving tour boats for Ocean Outfitters along with raising a young family, helping in her partner's float plane business, travelling the Pacific by sailboat and venturing around the world by air. She was born and raised on an island that harbours Tofino from the open Pacific Ocean. She learns from the sea, the forests, wildlife and helps to protect and preserve the diverse life of Clayoquot Sound. She drove boats as a little girl, owned her own aluminum speedboat by the age of 16 and has travelled with a friend in a 50 foot sailboat for over 2 months to the mid Pacific (Christmas Island). If she’s not working you won’t run into Misty in town….she will be out in the Sound harvesting berries, exploring or frying a fish she just caught over a warm fire in a secluded bay….Misty’s awareness of west coast wildlife is shown in her enthusiasm and her love as well as her adept knowledge of the history and inter-connectedness of it all. Her unparalleled sense of adventure is infectious with a positive and in depth wisdom that comes from someone who was born and raised in the midst of the wilderness of this coast. She is of First Nations ancestry and is 27 years young. Peter Schulze: Peter speaks both German and English- this often comes in handy for him! He is an avid surfer, accomplished wood turner and works closely with Strawberry Island Research. He spent last winter in Hawaii working with Jim Darling( a renowned marine biologist). They were studying the habits of humpback whales- very exciting Peter! You can view Peter's woodturnings and bowls in the gift shop of Ocean Outfitters. Ken Thomson: Ken, our fearless leader! Ken started his boating career at 11 years of age in a leaky canoe- he was hooked! Since then he has worked as a fisheries officer on the north coast, owned a thriving tugboat business in bella Coola, refurbished a 90' schooner, sailed across the Atlantic TWICE and owned charter companies in Bucerias and Belize.
