Spring into Summer!
"The Whales Have Arrived!"
The whales are back from basking in the warm waters of Mexico in turn we had a great Pacific Rim Whale festival in March. The sightings were strong with many gray whale mothers and calves, juvenile males and 2 dot star (the oldtimer). We also had daily sightings of sea otters and sealions. Did you know seaotters were almost driven to extinction during the fur trade of the 1700's? They were reintroduced to the west coast in the early 1980's and since then have flourished in numbers- it is a delight to view them in their natural habitat!
Unfortunately with the whales came more bad weather so we are quite certain that we are due for a plethora of sunny days really soon! Another perfect reason to visit Tofino in April is The Annual Shorebird Festival (April 22-24) This is a time when thousands of birds and wildfowl find their way to the west coast on their annual migration. It is a spectacular sight looking upwards and seeing hundreds of birds flying overhead in that familiar V-shape. There are many events and programs to participate in during this time. Joining in on one of our whalewatching tours is also an opportunity to "quietly visit" the offshore bird sanctuary of Cleland Island. There you can view from a distance oystercatchers, puffins, sooty shearwaters, cormorants and many other interesting species of birds. Binoculars are always encouraged on any tour as we do our best to respect the viewing guidelines set out for Clayoquot Sound.
