Plankton are organisms that live in the ocean, drifting with tides and currents. Boring?

Hardly! Collectively, plankton fuel the entire marine ecosystem and represent the vast majority of the ocean's total biomass. This incredibly varied group includes everything from algae encased in jewel-like glass shells, to fierce and deadly predators - and their elusive prey. An entire ecosystem on a microscopic scale!

2018 Pelagic Trip with seabird guide Mark Maftei

May 5th and 6th, 2018

This trip will be an all-day excursion to some of the offshore banks and canyons in search of albatrosses, shearwaters, storm-petrels and other pelagic birds. Exact route to be determined based on local weather, fishing activity, and up-to-date recon of where birds seem to be concentrating. Our goal is to bird out to, and then along, the shelf edge near one of the large offshore canyons about 35 miles off the coast.

Join Ian McAllister for an evening of exploration, research and wildlife conservation. Ian is a conservationist, filmmaker, photographer and writer who has spent the last 30 years working to protect B.C.’s coastal wilderness and wildlife. Ian has written ten books on the Pacific coast and is currently directing a large screen IMAX film on the Great Bear Rainforest. A co-founder and the Executive Director of the non-profit Pacific Wild he is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society and the International League of Conservation Photographers.

Ocean Outfitters photography trips are based around the landscapes and wildlife of Clayoquot Sound. They are taught by our tour guide Kyler Vos who has a diploma in professional photo imaging, is the owner of his own photo gallery locally in Tofino, and shoots a wide variety of photography as a career. Our photography trips are for beginners, intermediates, and professionals. Not only a great learning curve in how to create professional images but to take you in and around Clayoquot Sound giving you information and accessibility to wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
