October is one of my favourite times of the year for freshwater fishing in Tofino. Vast schools of salmon and sea run trout have waited patiently all summer for fall rains to swell rivers and kick off the annual spawning migration. On every high tide fresh runs of salmon enter the rivers and power upstream. The valleys are filled with energy and all manner of forest critters gather on the riverbanks to feed.
Anglers are well advised to follow natures rhythms and follow the footsteps of the bears and wolves to our local rivers where each cast with a fly or light tackle promises an ocean fresh salmon, steelhead, or trout. The fishing can be fantastic at times, and perfect for anglers of all skill levels. Parents should readily consider taking their kids river fishing during October, as there’s no better time to get the young ones in on the action.
